About Laurens Vermaesen
During my training at Croydon College of Art I discovered the painters who continue to inspire me. Like the Italian Renaissancesists, many of the 19th century Russian realists, the Pre-Raphalites and some of the Impressionists. I still experience a lot of excitement when I look at the works of J.W.Waterhouse, Laurens Alma-Tadema, Joaquin Sorolla, Anders Zorn, John Singer Sargent and Andrew Wyeth. There are, of course, also living artists that I admire, like Pino Daeni, Robert Bateman and the Dutch painter Nico Vrielink. What they have in common are well considered compositions, excellent technical skills and an exquisite use of colour.
I study their work very regularly and I never grow tired of them. I do not only admire them, but their paintings are giving me hope and they are teaching me to enjoy the beauty that is surrounding me, they sharpen my eyes and the excitement that I experience is giving me a sense of direction in the way I want to grow as a painter.
It is difficult to analyse and understand our purpose as artists. But I have come to believe that our responsibility is to attempt to bring hope and joy through beauty to a despondent humanity. I believe people want to be uplifted. Creating beauty, in one way or another, can do just that. I feel our call is to inspire others by what inspires us as individual artists.
